How to Control Your High Notes
Jul 10, 2026
Gonna get straight to it....
High notes, they’re a doozie. Below are four things you can do to automatically improve your high notes, in any style of music. And if you need to do, share this with a friend...
✅ When practicing the high notes, sing in front of a mirror and make sure your jaw is down. Not overextended, but stretched downward. This allows the air molecules to shift in your throat, making high notes easier to sing.
✅ Sing more quietly in the lines before the high note. I see this over and over again, name….singing everything so loudly so that there’s nothing extra to give for a high note. Be more efficient than that. For example, if your high note is in the chorus, make sure your prechorus is quieter so you have room to grow into the high notes in the chorus.
✅ If the high note has an “l” or “r” sound, take it out! Ls and Rs are death to singing….don’t sing them on high notes. The tongue movement required for Ls and Rs mess up the needed resonation for a strong high note. Don’t worry about your audience understanding your words. On a high note, the most important thing is making it sound strong. So sacrifice an “l” or an “r” here or there.
✅ Finally, when you're singing a new song with high notes after you've mastered the above three things in older music, double check this list and work through it. Old habits die hard, yah?
Be super intentional in working your high notes in the ways listed above so you can sing well and feel confident.
