How to Prevent Vocal Damage

Look, every singer loses their voice sometimes. It just happens.

But there’s a difference between having a tired voice for a week or even a couple weeks and experiencing vocal damage.

Vocal damage can occur for all sorts of reasons…

✅ car accidents

✅ botched surgery

✅ genetic predisposition

✅ poor voice use and management….

Good thing there’s a lot you can do to prevent damage to your voice. Take a look 👀👇🏼

👉🏼 Warmup and down - That’s right, warm UP and DOWN. The warmup stretches your muscles and prepares you to sing while the warm down works the lactic acid out of your muscles and prepares your voice for rest. (You can find a warmup and down here.)

👉🏼 Hydrate - tank up on that hydration at meals! Avoid sipping before or during performance, (that can actually inhibit the benefits of adequate hydration), so be sure to drink extra water at meals during the days before a performance.

👉🏼 Rest - NOTHING can benefit your voice like a couple consecutive nights of good rest. JUST. DO. IT. Put your phone and screens away, read a book, and hit the pillow earlier than usual.

👉🏼 Pinch your cheeks - Take a look at the picture below.

Pinching helps protect your vocal folds, so any time you feel strain down in your throat, try pinching and singing that same song again, and the strain will most likely be gone.

👉🏼 See a doctor - When you’ve had chronic hoarseness, discomfort, or pain, or you think you’ve damaged something in your throat, don’t hesitate to visit a doctor. A quick scope can mitigate any worries by showing that nothing is wrong, or it can help diagnose if something is wrong.
